Just spent a wonderful week in Hervey Bay with my husband David. What a magic week it was. We took our mountain bikes and our lovely shiny sea kayaks, wanting to test them out in the ocean. See up until now we have only kayaked in the Brisbane creeks.
One morning we decided to launch our kayaks out near the jetty where the boat leaves for Fraser Island. Originally we had wanted to paddle to Fraser, but were told that experienced kayaker's took around 2.5 hrs, so we decided to give it a miss until we had more experience.
Anyhow on this particular morning, there was no one around and the sea was as calm as can be - it just looked like glass. The wonderful blue sky met the sea and it was a beautiful picture of calm and serenity.
The tide was going out at a slow pace and was carrying myself and my husband out to sea at a leisurely pace. We drifted and paddled and everything was surreal. Just a note we both have our own kayak, mine is blue and David's is red.
Then I heard it, a big intake of breath and to my delight I saw a few dolphins leap out of the water. As I reached for my camera, they disappeared beneath the water and to my surprise another couple surfaced just behind me. Then to the side of me and again in front. We were just surrounded by surfacing dolphins, swimming and playing in the crystal clear, peaceful water. I just drifted around for about half an hour entranced with the natural awesome display by these magnificent and beautiful creatures.
Then they headed out to sea and myself and David returned to reality. What a wonderful experience it was and something I will never forget. We all know what a dolphin is, but to be up close and personal with them was beyond explanation.
I tried to take a photo and David had his movie camera, but we failed miserably - I nearly got a good shot but had water on my lens and David funnily enough had water on his video camera lens.
